MOMENTUM RESIDENCIES

As part of the MOMENTUM CURATORIAL PROGRAM, the MOMENTUM RESIDENCY offers a unique framework for research-based residencies centered on artistic experimentation, curatorial exploration, and critical engagement. Taking place at ZAKHAM Studio in the heart of the Medina of Tunis, the residency invites MOMENTUM Fellows not only to develop and produce a curatorial or artistic project, but also to communicate and document their process actively throughout their stay.

Part of the individual practice fields for the MOMENTUM Fellow is selecting an artist or curator with whom they collaborate for 10 to 30 days. Together, they embark on a journey of intensive artistic research, exploring new methodologies and ideas within an open space for creative experimentation. The residency encourages mindful encounters with local practitioners as well as cultural voices from beyond Tunisia, fostering meaningful exchanges and collaborations. Throughout the program, participants engage in a dynamic process that includes periods of reflection, dialogue, and creation. The residency culminates in public presentations and participatory actions, opening the work to interaction with the neighborhood and public review.

The program immerses MOMENTUM Fellows in the practical aspects of devising, executing, and documenting a curatorial or artistic project. This hands-on process is fundamental for young curators to bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice. By emphasizing open-ended artistic research and experimentation, the residency encourages curators to assess new ideas and methodologies without the pressure of predetermined outcomes. This helps cultivate innovative and original curatorial voices. The MOMENTUM Residency serves as an open space for innovative practices that challenge conventional narratives and promote new forms of cultural production.

Engaging in reflective phases, dialogue, and feedback allows participants to critically assess their practices, gain confidence, and develop the adaptability needed for a successful curatorial career. Curators are tasked with documenting and communicating their processes, strengthening their ability to articulate ideas — an essential skill for grant writing, publishing, and public speaking. The MOMENTUM RESIDENCY catalyzes up-and-coming curators to experiment, collaborate, and engage meaningfully with contemporary art practices, preparing them for the evolving demands and opportunities in the field.

This format offers a productive setting that nurtures mindful encounters, broadens perspectives, and builds valuable networks. The program encompasses public presentations and participatory actions to train curators on how to connect with broader audiences, enhancing their ability to create impactful exhibitions and events.
