BACKGROUND

Nayrouz Ben Fredj is known for her experimental approach to set design of sensorial experiences. Her projects are often driven by themes of memory, identity, and belonging, exploring how personal and collective histories shape contemporary cultural experiences. Through all aspects of her work, she strives to create mindful encounters.

Her work is rooted in a commitment to transdisciplinary collaboration, she brings together artists, performers, designers, and technologists to foster innovative creative processes that blur the boundaries between disciplines. She specializes in curating public art projects with a strong focus on audiovisual practices, particularly site-specific installations that use sound, light, and media to activate urban and communal spaces.

Her curatorial practice is grounded in a belief in communication and art mediation, with a focus on making contemporary art accessible and engaging for a wide range of audiences. Through thoughtfully designed participatory and educational formats, she facilitates meaningful connections between artworks and the communities they inhabit.

Through her involvement in the community-driven art projects INTERFERENCE in Tunis, and SEE DJERBA in Houmt Souk, she developed a sensitivity to the particular nature of light and media art. Beyond working with artists and audiences, she supported the development of documentation strategies that translate the sensory and conceptual essence of these works into visual records and lasting narratives.

STATEMENT NAYROUZ BEN FREDJ

I work at the intersection of scenography, installation, and collaborative practice to explore themes like identity, silence, memory, and spiritual reconnection. My process is rooted in listening to spaces, to people, and to what often remains unspoken. I’m inspired by frequencies, resonance, and cymatics, using these as frameworks to shape experiences that vibrate on both physical and emotional levels. My materials are light, sound, voice, mirrors, plexiglass, reflect, echo, and invite presence. I see scenography as a poetic language, a way of holding space for transformation, healing, impactful both for the individual and collective.
