CARRIED LIGHT
This artwork explores connection to place, memory, and identity through two videos.The first video shows the path to my grandfather’s house in Douiret, from the landscape to the interior. Video frames overlap, reflecting how memory holds fragments that do not form a fullimage. Inside the house, light moves across surfaces and is captured. Glitches appear in theimage during editing, and these breaks are kept to show a response from the space. Black screens interrupt the sequence, breaking rhythm and inviting attention.The second video gathers maps and symbols showing Amazigh presence across a region. Layers of old and new maps and script merge without order or sequence, highlighting coexistence and continuity across time and place. Together, the videos create a dialogue between personal memory and collective history,
between physical space and symbolic geography. They ask how presence can be shown through layering, movement, and interruption, and how
identity exists in overlapping fields of time and place.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Achref Guesmi, also known as COUZ, is a visual artist based in Tunisia whose practice centers around videography and photography. His work reflects a personal and evolving exploration of everyday life, memory, and movement. With a deep interest in visual storytelling, he experiments with new tools and techniques while remaining attentive to the emotional and poetic potential of the image. Committed to continuous learning, Achref approaches his practice with curiosity and care, often finding himself uncertain of the path ahead. This uncertainty pushes him into new grounds, where unexpected discoveries shape his work. Through his lens, he seeks to share moments that resonate quietly but powerfully with viewers.
